Australian State Opposition Says GM Food to be Labeled

Mick Murray, the West Australian State Opposition Agriculture Spokesman, is appealing the State Government to introduce labeling on products containing genetically modified food.

The Council of Australian Governments, chaired by Federal Health Minister, Dr. Neal Blewett, is carrying out an Independent Review of Food Labeling and Products nationwide, and Murray is requesting the public to make submissions to it.

While, written submissions are closing on May 14th, the review will organize a public hearing in Perth on Wednesday.

At present, country of origin labeling applies to only some products, specifically packaged food, and a limited variety of unpackaged foods, such as pork, seafood, fresh fruit and vegetables, excluding chicken or beef.

Now that the Government has removed the ban from GM canola crops, buyers will have a choice, says Mr. Murray.

He said, "And I think now the consumer should also have the option if they want to eat GM or non-GM".

He added that it's a fundamental right of consumers to know what they are eating and having clear labeling is one of the methods for this to happen.
