A recent research on honey bees has found a special type of bee which performs the function of providing warmth in the hives working as the radiator.
These bees have been given the name "heater bees", by the researchers. They are marked for playing a very significant role in the hives. A new technology allowed the researchers to measure the temperature in the hives.
Using new technology that allows scientists to see the temperature inside the bee hives, researchers have been able to understand the mechanism with which the heater bees provide central heating system in the hives.
The body temperatures of these bees remain relatively higher than the other ones, which additionally support the social frame in the bee colony.
The researchers shared that the bees follow the division of labor in the colony assigning specific roles to all the members.
The heater bees also have the capability of maintaining the temperature of the offspring nest and altering it by around one degree Celsius by sealing the young bees called "pupae" in wax cells, till they undergo a maturity process.
"By carefully regulating the temperature of each pupae, they change the way it develops and the likelihood of the role it will fulfill when it emerges as an adult", said the researchers.
