The researchers on Sunday revealed that a new heart clip from Abbott which is an experimental, minimally invasive method to repair leaky heart valves proved to be highly safe and nearly as effective as open heart surgery, fulfilling the primary goals of a pivotal study.
The little clip is reported to be threaded via an artery into the heart, opposed to open heart surgery.
The device known as mitral valve repair device is revealed to be filed by Abbott for approval by the FDA on the basis of these positive findings.
The study made a comparison of the device against surgery to witness if it was as safe and as effective as the latter at mending leaky heart valves.
The study majorly emphasized on the comparison involving number of major adverse events -- a composite of 12, including major stroke, re-operation of mitral valve, urgent cardiovascular surgery, heart attack, kidney failure, major bleeding, and death -- at 30 days.
In the surgery group, 42 of the 55 adverse events were major bleeding, researchers said.
The study posted that among patients who underwent the procedure, 9.6 percent reported to face major adverse events, compared to more than 57 percent of patients who underwent surgery.
