“.com” domain Completed its 25 Years

On Monday, the .com domain marked its 25th anniversary, reveals VeriSign.

Symbolic. com was the first site to be registered through a ".com" domain on March 15, 1985. Now, there are around 80 million sites with a ".com" address, which is inclusive of 11.9 million online business websites,
1.8 million sports based websites and 4.3 million entertainment sites.

"For anyone under the age of 30, they probably don't remember when the Internet wasn't in their life. It's become such an essential part of how we work, live and play. The 25th anniversary of .com gives us a moment to step back and realize how deeply the Internet revolution has transformed our society", said Mark McLaughlin, Chief Executive and President of VeriSign.

As part of the anniversary, VeriSign has decided to introduce Project Apollo to support and balance the .com infrastructure by the 2020.

VeriSign has decided to host a Policy Impact Forum on Tuesday in Washington, D. C., as part of the anniversary, in which Former President Bill Clington will be present.

VeriSign has also released a site 25yearsof. com, to underline some of the .com attainments from the past 25 years.
