Singapore’s recent addition to the field of education is the Singapore Institute of Technology which is slated for opening in August.
The Institute will spread across five campuses which will be located in Singapore’s five polytechnics. Tan Chin Tiong, President, Singapore Institute of Technology, says, "If you look at polys currently, they are very well-built in terms of infrastructure - the labs, studios and the teaching classrooms that they already have. I would say they are world-class, so there's no reason not to leverage on what they already have".
Besides these there will be another main campus where students will be required to attend compulsory modules.
This “distributed campus system” is a nascent venture in Singapore and is expected to be ready in 2014.
SIT will offer two year degree courses with an economical annual fee of S$ 9,000.
Five overseas universities comprising Technical University of Munich, DigiPen Institute of Technology, Newcastle University, University of Nevada and the Culinary Institute of America, have agreed to collaborate with SIT to offer degree courses and provide faculty members. Some teachers of the Polytechnics will be offered adjunct lectureships at SIT.
SIT comes with the hope of proffering cost effective and convenient quality education and will prove especially beneficial to polytechnic graduates looking for a university degree
