Although Declared Priority, Funding for Dementia Lessened, Blames MP Report

In a report presented by MPs, Government has been blamed for not knowing why the funds for dementia research are plunging down even after its promise of making it a priority. It has been blamed in the report that dementia is not taken as seriously as cancer, heart disease and stroke.

It has been brought into light by Public Accounts Committee which warns that like cancer in 1950s, dementia is a hidden disease. It is also being said that Government is ignorant of where the funds of £60million are beings spent. The drugs and the treatment measures are not uniformly available and the promised improvements in 2007 have not yet been fulfilled, reason being the delays and irresponsible attitude of the Government towards the prevention of the dementia, stated the report.

On one hand, where the rise in the funds for cancer and the heart disease studies have increased £250 million and £75million respectively, the funding spent for dementia research on the other hand decreased by 7% to £29.9million.

“There is a wide gulf between what the Department of Health keeps saying it is going to do about dementia services and what it actually does”, stated Tory MP Edward Leigh Chairman of the Cross-party committee.

It has been known that £8.2billion annually is required for direct health and social care costs for dementia as around 600,000 people in England suffer from the condition, and it is expected to become 1.4 million in next 20 years.
