HIV Infections Increase in Queensland at Alarming Rate

The number of HIV afflicted people has been increasing at an alarming rate in Queensland. About 12 new cases are added in the list of HIV affected people last year who fell in the age group of 25 to 34.

Human immunodeficiency virus causes AIDS, which devastates the white cells in a body, leading to reduced immunity, consequently making the body prone to various deadly diseases.

Queensland's Chief Health Officer Jeannette Young shared that it is the highest number that has ever been reported.

Dr. Young said, “Of all HIV notifications last year in Queensland, 88 per cent were in males, and the highest notification rates were in the 25-34 years age group”.

He adds that this increase is may be due to the campaign which is encouraging gay men to undergo an HIV test.

The Australian Health Ministers' Conference will make a new national HIV strategy, next month.

It has become very important for people to engage in safe sex or they will fall prey to HIV. Expenditure is incurred in new HIV-AIDS prevention strategies and education campaigns by the health authorities.
