Mapua Residents Still Plagued by Worries Over Clean-up

Residents of Mapua have not been provided any relief by the Ministry of Health's reassurances that the clean-up of the area's former Fruitgrowers' Chemical Company would not be creating any long-term ill-effects on people's health.

The Ministry's thought on a Public Health report, which was released yesterday, has been designated as a "whitewash". The report seems to have left the people living in Mapua much concerned and skeptical about all the risks involved in the clean-up of the clean-up of the very toxic area as far as their health goes, mainly because of all the "holes" in the information shared.

The report directly means that as many as 30 households located on the south of the ex-company site cannot be given any assurances and certainties as to whether their health would be affected.

Yesterday, as many as 50 people had gathered at the Mapua Community Hall in order to hear the details on the report's findings. The crowd also included over 14 officials from the prestigious institutions of the Tasman District Council, the Ministry of Health and the Ministry for the Environment.
