On Saturday afternoon, over 1000 Nelsonians made their way to Saxton Field in order to lend their support to the upcoming Relay for Life organized by the Cancer Society. Teams from all across the area dressed the part to energetically walk around the 500-meter track for a total of 17 hours. Everyone would remember all those who lost their battle against cancer and applaud all those who managed to survive.
For this year's event, about 100 teams have entered the annual Cancer Society 24-hour relay. Last year, the event managed to garner about $180,000 for the charity.
"We didn't know what we were doing at all. We were cold and hungry and at one stage there was just two of us going around the track for hours. We're going to be a lot better off this year. We will be bringing sleeping bags, chairs and a barbecue", said receptionist and organizer for one of the participating teams last year.
The Relay for Life has managed to evolve into a worldwide movement which involves over 3.5 million people every year.
