Quantic Dreams' interactive drama, Heavy Rain, boasts of an impressive milieu, terrific graphics, an interesting plot, but the heavily acclaimed game lacks consistency in voice acting. Some of the acting performances are not appealing at all.

Nowadays, videogame industry is in competition with the movie business to offer entertainment along with story-telling. But poor vocal performances let it down.

Other games like Aliens vs Predator, Army of Two: 40th Day, and Final Fantasy XIII have called criticism in the areas of scripting and performance.

Andy Emery, Creative Director at Side, which is a leading supplier of casting, directing and recording services to the videogame and movie sectors, says that there is lack of focus on story and character in games.

"Even with the best Hollywood actors on board, a poor script can result in poor voice acting".

Mark Estdale, Director at Casting and Voice Recording Agency, Outsource Media, said, "Actors need to be cast when the developer is starting the design process. I'm working on one production now where we're there really early in development, and the whole cast is involved - they're giving voices to the characters as they're being designed".

It is surprising that in Heavy Rain, the actors who offered their voice, motion and facial capture data were given full scripts and had spent three years on the project, which was sufficient time to get into their roles. Moreover, during the process, the game's creator and writer, David Cage had also given enough details of background.

It is possible that may be the actors were inexperienced in games.
