In a city rife with cases of sexual exploitation the city council at Edomonton has proclaimed the Sexual Exploitation Week of Awareness as a way of bringing the issue to light and fighting the causes that lead up to it.
The week was kicked off with Councilor Linda Sloan saying, "Sexual exploitation in any form is unacceptable, and it will not be tolerated in Edmonton. Residents must do their part to learn about sexual exploitation and report it to police if they become aware of it happening".
The week shall play host to a number of events aimed at raising awareness levels on the issue, such as a free presentation by Craig Krieger from Alberta Justice on keeping children safe from online sexual predators. Citizens are also encouraged to wear the color orange as a way of exhibiting support for ending sexual exploitation.
Distributing, sales and making child pornography, prostitution, human trafficking, sexual assault and internet luring all come under the heading of sexual exploitation.
The City of Edmonton has seen 950 children need help through the Protection of Sexually Exploited Children Act in the last 10 years.
