Google announced that its Nexus One mobile is now available as an unlocked device that has access to AT&T 3G network in US and Rogers Wireless in Canada. Nexus One now also comes without a service plan.
Earlier Nexus One was an unlocked device, meaning users could use it with a SIM card of most GSM operators throughout the world.
Earlier, though users could access the T-Mobile 3G network, they were unable to access AT&T and Rogers Wireless’s 3G networks since these had different frequencies. The networks open to users were only 2G or EDGE.
This drawback has been corrected and now users have the alternative of choosing between 3G networks with 850 MHz, 1900 MHz, 2100 MHz frequency bands and 900 MHz, AWS, 2100 MHz frequency bands. While the former is recommended for use of AT&T in the US and Rogers in Canada the latter is suggested for use on T-Mobile in the U. S.
Commenting on this development AT&T spokesman Fletcher Cook said, "We'll accept a compatible device on our network".
This improvement in Nexus One could enhance its appeal and increase competition for Apple’s iPhone.
