Women are two times more prone to death than men after they suffer from a heart attack as they are given different medical treatment, unveiled the researches.
About 3,000 women and men, who were hospitalized in the French region of Franche-Comte after a cardiac event between 2006 and 2007, were examined on the basis of treatment they received.
Lesser women received either angiogram or angioplasty, according to the study. The lead author of the study was of the opinion that women should be given the more strong treatments which are often reserved for men.
Francois Schiele, Head of cardiology at the Besancon university hospital, said, “When there are no clear contradictions, women should be treated with all recommended strategies, including invasive strategies”.
He shared that there were physiological differences between men and women, which were taken into account while recommending them the same treatment. He cited examples from angioplasties, telling that the men tend to have big and straight arteries as compared to women who have winding and small arteries.
But he clarified that stents can be inserted into the arteries of female patients but only if the surgeon is properly skilled to handle the procedure.
