CT scan use jeopardizes the young

A radiology expert, sensing that the risk of developing a fatal cancer in life following a single scan at initial years of life, is urging doctors to get a written consent from parents before ordering CT scans on children. He is trying for it after stating the cancer developing chances get 70 times more by scan.

The Medicare watchdog has warned people about unnecessary exposure to cancer risks by being given scans for complaints as trivial as back pain.

Radiology expert John de Campo states that the chances of developing a fatal cancer by excess use of CT scans are more in people who are up to the age of 20. It is because their cells divide faster and get damaged also easily.

According to the professor who is a faculty of medicine at Bond University, one in every 500 babies if exposed to CT scan would develop a fatal cancer later in life.

Professor de Campo said, "Patients and even doctors were largely unaware of the risks of CT scans, and seeking informed consent, the formal explanation and acknowledgement of risks, as commonly done before surgery, should become routine."
