No serious risk related to asbestos exposure
No serious risk related to asbestos exposure

About 24 rooms at the Mackay North High School were evacuated last week following reports that the north Queensland school has been exposed to asbestos. But an occupational medicine expert has put chances of students being affected at rest.

Reports stated that the school was facing asbestos exposure since September.

An information session was organized last night, which was attended by about 80 parents from the school. These parents seeked answers about what caused the delay in evacuating the students and what the risk of exposure is.

Professor Keith Adam told them that the risk was not of anything to worry about but also added that there is no way of determining if students had breathed in asbestos fibres.

He added, "I mean I don't want to make it sound like I'm trying to dismiss the risk of asbestos, because it's very real. We doctors aren't clever enough at the moment, we don't have tests that are sensitive enough or useful enough to be able to do anything."

Parent Paul Roddy said that the session was informative and the seriousness of the authorities about the whole matter could be sensed.

He added, "Unfortunately no-one can really tell us what the exposure is, but at least we know they're serious about it."

An investigation is underway into the incident.
