Around 60% aboriginals living on the Cape York Peninsula and Torres Strait Islands could be the habitual users of cannabis. Detective Sergeant Gary Hunter said that the rate of users has gone high within these communities. The usage of cannabis has decreased in Australia where the cost of the drug is lower as compared to the cost demanded in Cape York Peninsula and Torres Strait Islands.
A gram of cannabis in a main city in Australia would probably cost between $15 and $20, whereas Indigenous communities in Cape York and the Torres Strait are shelling out somewhere between $50 and $75.
The reasons which affect the cost are accessibility, availability and its demand in the region. Even though people do not earn that well, yet, people are ready to spend a lot of money to get the drug.
Over the past four years, the situation has worsened. People are using cannabis as a substitute to alcohol. The worry is more regarding the consumption of cannabis by young people. With the increased usage of the drug, people fail to realize the kind of problems this drug can create for them.
