Cornell University, an Ivy League school famous for its spectacular gorges and an old reputation for unceasing suicides, initiated with an extravagant move of posting lookouts on bridges and going door-to-door to check on students.
In recent weeks, two bodies were reportedly recovered from a gorge: freshman Bradley Ginsburg of Boca Raton, Fla., on Feb. 17 and sophomore William Sinclair of Chevy Chase, Md., Thursday.
Moreover, Friday turned to be even more haunting, as junior Matthew Zika, of Lafayette, Ind., was witnessed falling into the same gorge. His body is yet to be recovered from swollen Fall Creek below.
The move initiated by university officials emerges following an "especially painful week" damaged by two of the deaths.
However, it is unclear whether the deaths are suicides.
University spokeswoman Claudia Wheatley said Tuesday that while school officials could not ponder over the individual cases, one case was claimed to be a suicide and the other two were under investigation.
"It's a kind of bewilderment and a determination to make sure we've done everything we can to keep it from happening again", Wheatley added.
