Enhanced Cyber Defenses Detailed by New FCC Broadband Plan

The National Broadband Plan, which was present to the Congress by the Federal Communications Commission during this week, is inclusive of various stipulations that could end up equipping the US communications networks with much stronger defenses against cyber crime and threats and also offer added protection to users' privacy online.

In all, the 370-page long plan details strategies that would significantly update US communications infrastructure and ultimately end up delivering broadband connectivity to as many as 100 million US residents over the coming decade. In addition, the new plan would be providing arguments in favor of the shift that includes a transition to clean and pulled-back energy usage, greater access to jobs and training and more Government efficiencies.

In addition to many other things, the new plan also seems to be providing a boost for the development of the current cyber security infrastructure, by proposing the implementation of various online privacy measures and demanding continued and long-term cooperation between the FCC and the Department of Homeland Security on public safety issues and initiatives.

"Communications providers have experienced frequent attacks on critical Internet infrastructure. A variety of state and non-state entities has demonstrated the ability to steal, alter or destroy data and to manipulate or control systems designed to ensure the functioning of portions of our critical infrastructure", the FCC wrote in the presented plan.
