The sodium levels in the North American products will most likely be cut by about 10 percent over the next two years, as proposed by Kraft Foods, the maker of Oreo cookies and Velveeta cheese.

This plan of the largest North American food maker would eradicate about more than 10 million pounds or more than 750 million teaspoons of salt from the popular foods manufactured in North America.

U. S. First Lady Michelle Obama also requested food manufacturers to re-formulate or re-package food to make it healthier for children.

She said, "We need you not just to tweak around the edges but to entirely rethink the products that you're offering, the information that you provide about these products, and how you market those products to our children".

President Barack Obama asked his wife to start a national public awareness effort and also invited Cabinet Ministers to propose an interagency plan.

Rhonda Jordan, President of Health & Wellness at Kraft Foods share that reducing sodium from food is not only good for consumers but will also benefit the business, if done properly.

Americans tend to eat more of the processed food; hence their sodium intake is far more as compared to the other countries of the world. Excessive salt consumption may lead to high blood pressure which can consequently result in stroke, kidney disease or heart disease.
