A Leamington man had to be hospitalized for three weeks after he consumed listeria-contaminated meat products, manufactured by Sienna Foods. Castro Pedro, 58, was diagnosed with listeria meningitis on February 3, after eating various Sienna-brand meats which his wife purchased. He had to spend 16 days in Intensive Care Unit and suffered a cardiac arrest while being in hospital.
On Monday, the suit was filed against Sienna Foods which also named a retail chain, Loblaw because it sold the affected Sienna brands. Calls to Siena Foods and Loblaw went essentially unanswered. The allegations have not yet been proved in the court.
Anthony Merchant, whose Regina-based Merchant Law Group launched the suit, also stated that listeriosis was the main reason Pedro suffered cardiac arrest. It could also be possible that he would not be unable to work again.
Another similar case found includes that of John Morgan, a 74-year-old Toronto-man who purchased a Sienna cooked ham from a Loblaw store and suffered from vomiting, diarrhea, headache and sweating for a week’s time after consuming a ham sandwich. Fourteen listeriosis cases have been registered since January.
