Youngsters Go More for Pills, Less for Condoms

Indian youth, being aware of the sex related problems and the measures to be adopted to prevent pregnancy are using less of condoms and more of oral contraceptives.

Condoms fail to provide 100% protection. They may burst while being used or sometimes they are not good enough to provide the required protection. Use of pills is a more reliable a solution as compared to the condoms.

A data was gathered from various Government hospitals, health centers and chemist shops across the city. It was found that the usage of condoms has decreased from 1,23,77,000 to 94,76,000, and the consumption of pills has escalated from 1,19,549 to 1,81,412 in the years 2006-2007 and 2008-2009.

Director of Delhi Health Services, S. Bhattacharjee said, ”These figures confirm a growing awareness among women about the need for effective contraceptive measures. The trend is not disturbing as young adults need to know all options available, this will enable couples to choose the most suitable contraceptive”.

Experts opine that emergency pills should not be consumed in an excessive amount, though it is safe to use the ones that are regular.
