Smoke Blankets North-West, Source Still Unknown
Smoke Blankets North-West, Source Still Unknown

The weather bureau believes that smoke blanketing Tasmania's central north and north-east may be due to a bushfire in Victoria, as it drifted from Victorian fuel reduction fires to compound high-intensity forest industry burns in the North-West.

However, till now State Government authorities have not been able claimed for the exact source of the smoke which is revealed to affect many population centres, including Launceston, Lilydale, Scottsdale, St. Helens and Deloraine.

"The light north-westerly winds have carried the smoke across Bass Strait and they've reached the northern parts of Tasmania", quotes Lance Cowled, the Bureau's Senior Forecaster.

In addition, reveals that we will be in a position to clarify the situation when a satellite picture is available later today.

The Asthma Foundation warns that the smoke may result in wheezing, chest tightness or shortness of breath in people with asthma. In addition, it recommends them to take required precautions.

It is reported that the foundation has issued a health alert after monitoring by the Environment Protection Authority showed a spike in air pollution.
