As sad as it is, even in today's times, gays are fiercely discriminated against. People, it seems, find it very difficult to let others live their lives peacefully and accept them the way they are. Why are gays discriminated against everywhere? Some might come around saying that they aren't and that this is a thing of the past, but that is so not true. Apart from the discrimination against gays on the marriage and military fronts, another one recently came to light. Seems like gays cannot be a part of clinical trials for medical purposes. Why, you ask? We don't know, because even the doctors who exclude them do not.
Reports have revealed that doctors and researchers needlessly drop gays and lesbians from clinical trials that look to investigate a range of topics, right from cancer and diabetes to depression and other physical and mental ailments. No reasons are given, no concrete ones at least!
The revelation seriously makes us want to raise serious doubts about the kind of a society we are living in. After all the promises of equality and rights to gays and lesbians, this happens, and no one even bothers to take the development seriously.
A review of as many as 243 clinical trails, which were basically related to couples and sexual functions after a range of medical treatments, revealed tat 37 of them exclusively dropped out gays. The situation is just plain sad.
Doctors, however, tend to defend themselves by saying that some trials need to be carried out without any same-sex relationships-involved subjects. Also, these groups always have greater chances of suffering from STIs and STDs. Not convincing enough, I would say.
Alright, let's just look at the whole thing from a medical instead of an ethical point of view. Not including gays and lesbians in a trial literally means that a group of the population is being excluded from a trial for potentially life-saving or life-altering drugs, and no one gets to know how the drug would affect this particular group. Things could very well be different for them! So then gays and lesbians should simply pick up medicines and treatments without even knowing how these would affect them and their health? Great!
Maybe we should try and works towards not discriminating gays, and actually make the world a better place.
