The last time a young entrepreneur had tried to put to into practice his dream and promise of revolutionizing music with some computer software, the entertainment industry ended him suing him for over a billion Dollars, but that has not managed to dampen some of the spirits out there.
Almost 10 years after Shawn Fanning released Napster, 26 year old CEO of Spotify, Daniel Ek, is getting ready to bring his services to the US. All across Europe, Spotify has managed to create waves, all thanks to the free music streaming services it offers. Over 10 million songs can be streamed without shelling out anything.
The major difference this time, however, is that Spotify is a legal service, and somewhat sanctioned by the music industry.
Originally, Mr. Ek had wanted to introduce the service to the US earlier during the year, but he recently revealed that discussions with record labels, in addition to over a thousand music publishers and royalty seekers, had "bogged down over details".
"This is a very, very complex industry. It's an industry that's been in decline for 10 years. They just want to make the right bet", Mr. Ek said, while talking about the delays involved in introduction of Spotify in America.
