Hubble 3D, a 43 minute film, is an IMAX initiative directed by Toni Myers and made with Warner Bros. It gives a whole new meaning to space exploration. The narrator of the movie is Hollywood star Leonardo Di Caprio.
The film is an informative piece on The Hubble Telescope, the laboratory based in space, 350 miles above the Earth. The movie was shot during the process of repairing and upgrading the Hubble telescope.
The IMAX team accompanied astronauts on space shuttle Atlantis in May2009. The movie was shot by the astronauts, who filmed as they worked. The movie has been filmed in meticulous detail and brings to light the dangers and difficulties faced by astronauts.
Mission specialist Michael J. Massimino says that each member of the crew had to familiarize himself to the usage of the IMAX camera. They were acclimatized to high-definition and digital still cameras.
Massimo declares that the crew wished to document certain things for which the training in handling IMAX cameras became necessary. "We wanted to take video and pictures of the external tank on the shuttle to see if anything had come off of it. That is what caused the problem with Columbia."
The film is slated to be released on Friday.
