With the aim to make the historic healthcare bill look better and more appealing, the Democrats pumped fresh billions into insurance subsidies for customers on Thursday, and also injected a new $250 rebate for seniors facing high prescription medicines. These developments are being viewed as last minute sweeteners to the $940 Billion legislation, which is now headed for a climatic vote, all set to happen this weekend.
A trip to Asia was scuttled by President Barack Obama in favor of the last-minute support and lobbying at the White House on the issue of his signature, and he was busy playing host to various wavering Democrats who were seeking different favors.
"It will make history and we will make progress by passing this legislation", predicted House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
The first alterations to the bill, which took 16 grilling months to make, were unveiled by the Democrats.
The main aim of the new healthcare legislation now is to expand health care to the 32 million uninsured Americans, in addition to keeping a check on the insurance industry, which has lately been raising premium rates rapidly and denying insurance coverage on the basis of pre-existing medical conditions.
Also, the bill looks to cut the federal deficits by some $138 Billion over the coming 10 years.
