Illness Hit Cruise

A trip on a cruise liner ended up causing illness to a large number of travelers. The Cruise Company reported that 406 of the more than 1,800 passengers fell sick after the ship’s departure on March 8.

According to reports from the Centers for Disease Control’s, the actual cause of the occurrence is not yet known. However, most of them were complaining of symptoms including diarrhea and vomiting.

The Celebrity Mercury returned with the passengers a day early around 2 a. m.

There two previous Mercury cruises this year from Charleston where passengers got sick with the norovirus which can spread quickly in closed quarters with symptoms including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and stomach cramps.

Linda McNeil, 61, of Hendersonville, N. C., got sick during the cruise, she and her husband had been anxious before they left. While a couple from Summerville, S. C had no complaints about the cruise and is looking forward for their ninth cruise.

Dr. J. Michael Kilby, a Medical University of South Carolina, said, "A whole slew of people can be sick in 48 hours because it has a short incubation period", he said.

It’s said that the Mercury will remain in place for three days for cleaning before it is scheduled to sail again on Sunday.
