McLaren is Set to Add a New MP4 to High-Speed Luxury Cars

The most successful Formula One team after Ferrari, McLaren group is all set to add a 200-mile- per-hour MP4 supercar to owners of Ferraris, Lamborghinis and other luxury Marques. It aims to add a swifter model to the group.

With the 600 horsepower MP4-12C, which is going to begin production in 2011, the group aspires to take over the premium two-seater car market by about 4 percent, which is equal to an approximate of 4,000 sales a year.

Antony Sheriff, Managing Director of the McLaren Automotive unit, said yesterday in an interview. "We expect they'll have a Ferrari, a Bentley, a Porsche, an Aston Martin or a Lamborghini -- even a Rolls Royce -- and will say, 'You know what, I'd really also like one of those in my garage".

He also said that McLaren Automotive is hoping to sell about 4,000 cars all across the globe per year out of which 30 percent to 40 percent of the sales will be in North America.

The MP4-12C would cost about £150,000, and the production will begin next year at a new £40m facility where the company is planning to build its head quarters in Woking. Also, this would open around 300 jobs.

According to Chairman Ron Dennis, the new model should be able to bring in profits within four or five years.

With production limited at 1,000 in the first 12 months, the Sheriff said that prospective buyers will have to wait for about a year to get hold of the MP4.
