National Academy of Sciences Committee Report Intensifies Delta Debate

According to a report by the National Academy of Sciences committee, the federal limits on water that can be pumped out of a major river delta for the use of California farmers are scientifically justified.

The academy is of the view that further study was required and the expected danger to various types of fish like Chinook Salmon, delta smelt and many more were not caused by the pumping only.

Hyden said, "It's time to stop pitting the economic interests of farmers against fishermen and move forward to find solutions. We have pushed the Bay-Delta system to the brink of collapse and saving it -- and the jobs that depend on it -- is going to require increased cooperation among all interests".

As the Endangered Species Act was flawed, the report showed that there is a need for better justifications of water restrictions, according to a spokesman for the California Farm Bureau Federation.

Paul Wenger, President of the California Farm Bureau Federation, shared that the Government should invent various techniques to manage delta pumps, so that more water be made available to the people, making sure that it does not harm the fish.
