Adding one more to the list of medical errors that end up making patients suffer, a mistake by doctors of West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St. Edmunds resulted in infertility of the patient following an operation in which the wrong testicle was removed.
This substandard operation, revealing the errors by untrained hospital staff, took place last year. But now, following the pressure under the freedom of information act, hospital, this week disclosed a detailed report regarding the errors. An investigation has been launched by the hospital and the recommended alterations regarding the hospital policies were immediately implemented.
The patient was originally operated to remove his left epididymis but the faulty operation ended up removing the right one. In another operation conducted to correct the mistake, the right testicle was also removed and therefore the patient was left completely infertile.
No information regarding the compensation has yet been stated by the hospital management.
The hospital’s Health Chief Nigel Kee said that an independent consultant looked into the matter and whatever was advised was opted along with directions on verifying all the details before the surgery.
He said that safety of patients was the utmost priority and that any such further incident will be avoided.
