Shanice Bailey, aged nine, use to complain about severe headaches and sickness, resulting in six visits to the doctors, in which he was said to be diagnosed with asthma and sent back to home. It was an optician who came to the rescue as she found during the eye test that Shanice was having a growth emerging out of the nerve.
If the optician named Nadia Ahmed would have not noticed the unusual growth, it would have resulted to paralysis from schwannoma, a tumor. Her mother Laura said, "I kept taking Shanice back to the doctor as her symptoms got worse and more frequent. I don't blame them but they should be given more training to check for problems in these areas”.
The relieved mother further added that they have been lucky to be the clients of Specsavers. If the growth would have not been discovered by them, then her daughter would have died because of the blockage of the fluid on the tip of the spine. The optician detected the swelling on the optic nerve when she was running the eye test using a magnifying light.
Trevor Lawson, spokesman from Brain Tumor UK, suggested that regular and frequent visits for eye- check up are very important but people tend to visit the eye specialist only in the time of sight problems.
