In a decisive victory, Frasier Health Authority was granted a permanent injunction by B. C Supreme Court to shut down operations at Home on Range, a Chillwack based dairy that sold unpasteurized milk to its customers.
According to a Frasier Health Authority spokesperson, "The risk of disease from consuming these unpasteurized products is high and can cause serious illness in people, especially young children, older folks and people with weakened immune systems”.
In B. C, it is illegal to sell unpasteurized milk, but it is not illegal to drink it. This tiny loophole enabled Alice Jongerden to establish a dairy by forming a cow farm cooperative with 400 Low Mainland members with ownership over 22 cows. The farmers were disappointed with the result but said they would continue efforts to get raw milk legalized in the state with the argument that it is healthier and safer than pasteurized milk.
However the argument did not cut it with Justice Miriam Gropper whose ruling will effectively prevent dairy from processing, packaging and distributing milk to its shareholders.
However, this does not stop die hard enthusiasts such as Gordon Watson from coming to Home On Range and processing and packaging milk for his own personal use.
