Canadian Senior Citizens On Prescription Drug Spree

According to a new study, Canada’s senior citizen maybe on an unchecked prescription drug spree as they strive to battle the decay of old age. Growing awareness it seems is accompanied by growing paranoia as our seniors pop pills for everything from Alzheimer’s through to blood pressure.

The report states that nearly two-thirds of Canadians over the age of 65 are on an average imbibing five or more prescription drugs daily. This details nearly one in every five who’s taking ten or more drugs and a staggering one in twenty who can’t seem to do without their daily dosage of fifteen or more medications. However, to compound worries it seems our grandparents are not just taking drugs but may perhaps be taking the same ones in a different guise.

The most commonly used amongst the lot is Statins which is used to combat high cholesterol and accounts for 40 per cent of the drugs used by our senior citizens. It is followed closely at 32% by ACE inhibitors used to fight high blood pressure and prevent heart failure.
