A sweet treat turned sour for 11 year old Sloan Anderson when he cut himself while consuming a piece of his favorite Ring Pop, a candy in the shape of a ring with a gem attached, bought from a Calgary store, when he discovered metal inside.
The incident which was reported by CBC News caused the store to withdraw the candy from its shelf while at the same time prompting the Canadian Food Inspection Agency to launch an investigation in the matter. Topps Company Inc, the American maker of the candy immediately apologized for the incident while defending its manufacturing safeguards which it says prevent metal from getting mixed in the candy. It too claimed to be looking into the matter and would be assisting the CFIA probe.
"We learned of this incident on Wednesday afternoon. We immediately reached out to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, and are working closely with them to thoroughly investigate the matter,” the company said in a statement.
Meanwhile, CFIA says it is delving into the ‘food aspect’ of the matter to determine whether the product was tainted on a larger scale and if a total recall of the candy was required.
