Report on Mistakes at Alberta Children's Hospital to be Released

Health Minister Gene Zwozdesky has asked the province’s medical superboard to release the full report on medical errors at Alberta Children’s Hospital within 10 days.

On Wednesday, during a question round in the Parliament, Liberal Health Critic, Kevin Taft pushed Zwozdesky if he would direct Alberta Health Services to release a report into four medical muddle at the hospital in February and March 2009.

The independent report released this week outlines poor communication and inappropriate use of gear prompted the problems.

However, the full 58-page inquiry by the Health Quality Council of Alberta was not disclosed because Alberta Health Services officials felt that it included confidential information, in spite of reassurance from the author of the report that it's fine.

Meanwhile, to make sure that the report is released by the end of next week, Zwozdesky has asked Alberta Health Services to work with the council, an independent organization, which encourages patient safety.

Zwozdesky told MLAs, “I have asked for the full detailed report to be released within 10 days”.
