CARRS-Q Introduces Driving Simulator, Expected to Control Increasing Death Toll

The Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety - Queensland has come up with the new technology which allows the drivers to drive under varied conditions at different speed by stepping into a Holden Commodore. The advanced driving simulator project cost around $1.5 million and is truly a state of the art device in itself.

The project provides an effective driving atmosphere with the capacity of four passengers and a complete virtual environment comprising of rear vision glasses, noisy engine and vehicle in motion. The simulator is empowered with eight computers, freedom motion platform that lets a three dimensional move and twists. The researchers plan to use the device for the purpose of many disciplines, two of them being road safety and human psychology.

The researchers aim to use this technology for observing the drivers' reactions and their driving skills, the device provides them with an opportunity to monitor the driver closely. The simulator would be used to examine the distractions and fatigue experienced by the driver while driving, the conditions and environments of the roads, driving incorporating alcohol and the emergency reactions.

The study of the drivers' behavior and its implementation is not an inexpensive study, hence money acts as a hindrance but another fact cannot be ignored which is the increasing number of road accidents in Australia, thereby increasing the death toll.
