Republican prosecutors from South Carolina and Florida on Friday revealed that they were preparing to launch a lawsuit if the health care bill reform legislation becomes a law this weekend, challenging its requirement that all Americans buy insurance.
South Carolina Attorney General Henry McMaster revealed that he and Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum spoke with other top state prosecutors Thursday in a conference discussing possible legal action.
McMaster posted it is proposed that it is mandatory for individuals to buy health insurance or else they will be have to pay a fine of up to $750.
"It is my belief and that of other attorneys general that this is clearly unconstitutional", he told McClatchy Newspapers. "That's why we're moving forward. We need to protect the sovereignty of our states and the liberty of our people".
Massachusetts in 2006 reportedly initiated with a health insurance law making it mandatory for its residents to purchase coverage. Several judges there have disapproved lawsuits contesting that mandate.
