It has been found that a drug for acne, which is quite cheap and has also been used for many decades, targets the immune cells which are infected with a dormant HIV virus and it also prevents those cells from replicating and reactivating.

This drug is expected to be effective for all people who are infected with HIV and this minocycline will also improve the treatment and it is to be used with a standard cocktail of drugs which is called HAART or Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy as a combination.

The most advantageous aspect of using this drug, which is generally used for acne, is that it targets only the cellular pathways and not the viral proteins and that is the reason why the virus has trouble developing resistance to the drug. But the challenge is not in using the drug but to keep the virus in the cells in the dormant state.

The pill is not a cure for the disease as it cannot be completely purged from the body. But the point in taking HAART is that, it can protect people from getting ill, if it is taken every day for the rest of their lives.
