Former Prime Minister regains lead in Iraqi voting

Officials have informed that the Iraqiya coalition led by former Prime Minister Iyad Allawi has regained a narrow lead in Iraqi parliamentary election vote counting.

Al-Jazeera reported on Saturday that however, the State of Law coalition led by Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki remains ahead in Baghdad.

The report further said that advisers from the U. N. Assistance Mission for Iraq have been monitoring the vote, updating results on a special Web site built for this year's elections.

Though up to 93 percent of the votes cast in the March 7 balloting have been counted, the total does not yet include the votes of soldiers, police or Iraqis living abroad, and Maliki has been ahead throughout the race, winning in seven of Iraq's 18 provinces compared to Allawi's win in five.

Allawi's Sunni support is likely due to his non-sectarian position and repeated condemnation of Shiite Iran, Al-Jazeera further added. (With Inputs from Agencies)
