General Motors Co's South Korean unit plans, to recall some 60,000 of the Chevy Cruze small car and the Captiva sports utility vehicle in South Korea. GM Daewoo Auto & Technology will recollect 45,957 of the Captiva, which is sold as the Winstorm in South Korea, due to defects with the steering system.
Recalls in other countries, where some vehicles were exported under the Chevrolet and Opel brands, will be decided and announced later in accordance with home rules.
Calling vehicles in to repair defects is a common tradition in the auto industry and it has been in focus since late last year, when Japan's Toyota Motor Corp. began massive recalls which eventually covered more than 8 million vehicles to repair brake and acceleration problems.
The company is also recalling 135 of its Damas model, a small commercial vehicle, over materials in seats that do not meet South Korean safety standards.
The recalls, also announced by the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs, came after GM Daewoo's South Korean rival Hyundai Motor Co. announced recalls last month of about 47,000 vehicles for problems with door fasteners.
