Warrnambool Saleyards Decision is Touchy for the Public
Michael Neoh

Warrnambool council has planned a special meeting to work on the decision related to the city’s saleyards. The agenda of the meeting is to discuss whether to close down the saleyards on Caramut road, which is run by the council, and accept the business proposal of VLE to construct latest saleyards at Cudgee.

The decision taken by the council would have a great impact on the economy of Warrnambool and Greg Walsh; the VLE (Victorian Livestock Exchange) Director commented that both the decisions are critical and controversial in nature.

It cannot be predicted about how the voting procedure would carry on in the meeting, which is creating panic between the ratepayers, but the probability of three councilors supporting the site closure and moving the operations to Cudgee cannot be ruled out, with the other three supporting to keep the 40 year old foundation alive on Caramut road. It was reported that one of the councilors was still considering the advantages and disadvantages of the closure.

City Mayor Michael Neoh commented that the public is sentimentally very attached to the saleyards. Most of the people linked with the saleyards feel ignored as they not have been asked to participate in the consultative process, and it is desired from the committee to include the public to give a clear picture on such an important issue.
