Dr. Mike Christian admitted that coming home was the hardest part for him.
The long hours of working and rough living conditions that were a result of opting to stay in Leogane, Haiti, and treat the earthquake ridden population did not bother the critical care doctor from Toronto, but leaving the place did, as the country is still in much need of help and betterment.
"There’s always more to do in places like Haiti. In Haiti, so many people need so much medical care. It’s jarring to come back to a place like Toronto where every piece of high-tech equipment is at our fingertips", Dr. Christian said.
The doctor was working for about 18 hours every day, for a total of 5-and-a-half weeks at a Canadian Forces field hospital. He landed back in Toronto on March 04.
When Dr. Christian first went to Haiti, the hospital where he was deployed recorded over 300 patients every day, all of them highly desperate for treatment. As the weeks progressed, however, the number dropped by about 50%, but there is still much that needs to be done.
Many of the patients who approached hospitals were the ones who were seeking help for conditions that they were suffering from before the quake happened.
