Researchers Find New Way to Kill TB Bacteria

The researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University have claimed that they have found a therapy that will not only cure Tuberculosis, but also ensure the prevention of the development of the bacteria again in the patient's body.

William R. Jacobs, the lead author of the study and professor of microbiology and immunology and of genetics at Einstein and also at Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator, said that the new therapy is much different from the previous anti-TB drug ones. He also said that the therapy has been brought forth in view of the rising need of curbing the disease.

Tuberculosis is basically caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacterial species. The researchers, during the latest study, had been working on the enzyme called GlgE.

GlgE is one of the four enzymes leading to the production of alpha glucans molecules. The alpha glucans are basically the blocks that are essential in the maintenance of the bacterial structure and the formation of the new microbes.

"We were amazed when we knocked out GlgE that we saw this DNA damage response. That's usually a very effective way to kill bacteria, when you start damaging the DNA", Jacobs said.

The researchers finally came up with a new way of destroying TB after they found that there is a remarkable link between their novel alpha glucan pathway and the second pathway that is capable of synthesizing alpha glucans as well.
