The Kansas House has given initial approval to a constitutional amendment challenging the new law, which was passed by the U. S. House a day before. The full House voted 76-44 on the proposed “Health Care Freedom Amendment” to the state constitution on Monday.
The federal Government requires that almost every Kansan must have health insurance. The amendment would make efforts to prohibit the same.
The planned change to the Kansas Constitution would go before voters in November, if it is passed by two-thirds majorities in the state House and Senate.
Though, some of the House Republicans and Democrats did argue that the amendment is required to protect Kansans’ right, so that they can make their own health care decisions. According to them, the insurance mandate is an undemocratic way of grabbing power by the Federal Government.
Rep. Brenda Landwehr, a Wichita Republican and one of the main sponsors of the legislation said, “I ask that we stand up for the people. Stand up for what this state and this country stand for, and that’s our rights, our freedoms and our civil liberties”.
