Nintendo has declared that the next handheld it launches will offer 3D technology. It also proclaimed that users will be able to enjoy 3D experience bereft of the 3D glasses.

It will be possible to view images in 3D with the naked eye. However, Nintendo has not made it clear how it will achieve this.

Nintendo claims that the device will permit users to play "games [which] can be enjoyed with 3D effects without the need for any special glasses".

The handheld console is slated to be released in the financial year 2010-2011. It is anticipated that it will be formally unveiled at the E3 games show in June.

The 3DS will also be backwards compatible with older DS games.

Nintendo states that the 3DS is a successor to the DS. It also mentioned that the name Nintendo 3DS may be a temporary name given to the device.

It is believed that Nintendo plans on Q4 2010 release. Sony and Microsoft have also chalked out plans to release their motion controlling devices Move and Natal in this period. These devices are meant to compete with Nintendo’s Wii.
