The Sun, daily tabloid newspaper published in the United Kingdom and Ireland had the most interesting headline on the front page which read Facebook 'spreads syphilis'.
Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease. It has been reported that the places where Facebook is the most popular have faced fourfold increase in the virus, these places are Sunderland, Durham and Teesside.
Professor Peter Kelly, Director of Public Health in Teesside, confirmed that his staff has discovered a relation between social networking sites and the rise in the rate of the disease. The young women have been found to be targeted the most.
He further said, "I don't get the names of people affected, just figures, and I saw that several of the people had met sexual partners through these sites. Social networking sites are making it easier for people to meet up for casual sex".
In Teesside, so far 30 cases of syphilis have been recorded but it is predicted that the true numbers are much higher than the recorded cases. In comparison to rest of the Britain, the young people in Sunderland, Durham and Teesside were more likely to be affected by syphilis.
A spokesman from Facebook has advised the users to be careful if they approach a person for a face to face meeting after meeting online.
