Infant Deaths Result in Baby Slings being Recalled

After three infant deaths were reported, two baby slings are being recalled in the US and Canada.

The recall involves slings manufactured by US company Infantino, the SlingRider and Wendy Bellissimo.

According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), babies could suffocate in the soft fabric slings. The agency advised parents to stop using the slings for babies below four months.

Infantino President, Jack Vresics said, "Our top priority is the safety of infants whose parents and caregivers use our products".

The company has offered a free replacement baby carrier, activity gym or shopping trolley cover to any customer who is affected in the US to compensate for the loss incurred.

Prior this month, the CPSC had issued a warning regarding sling-style baby carriers, saying that there's a possible suffocation risk to infants, especially babies under four months.

The CPSC revealed today that three of the deaths took place last year and were related to Infantino slings.

In its warning the CPSC had said that infants could suffocate in two ways, from a sling's fabric pressing against a baby's nose and mouth, obstructing the baby's breathing and suffocating a baby within a minute or two, or may be from the baby being hold in a curled position leading the infant to flop its head forward and limiting its capability to breathe.

Slings have been endorsed by baby experts as a way to pacify fussy babies or for nursing mothers who can breast-feed their children in the sling.

Parents never knew that their little babies would succumb to death taking to these slings. But maybe they just bought the slings without acknowledging how to use it properly.

Baby professionals and breast-feeding supporters claim that not all slings are unsafe. They say carriers, which keep a newborn baby firmly against the mother's body in a vertical position are actually safe.

The CPSC's concern is laudable to stop the baby slings in order to prevent baby deaths. But may be its wrong to put a stop on baby slings altogether. It is imperative to spread more awareness among parents regarding baby slings. When parents go to purchase baby slings, they should be educated how to use them and in what position is the baby safe.
