Sprint CEO Dan Hesse announced that in order to make a footprint in the U. S. based 4G market, the substantial investment in WiMax was essential. It will give a competitive edge to the company. This move was initiated to launch Sprint in the 4G market quickly. Sprint made the announcement in the CTIA Wireless conference in Las Vegas where it also introduced a 4G-capable smartphone.
Hesse further said, "LTE will most likely be the larger of the two 4G standards, but for us, we couldn't wait. Because of our spectrum position, we have the option to add other technologies later, but this allows us to get into this technology quickly".
The 4G services of Sprint are presently obtainable in 27 markets and the expansion plans are to extend it to Houston, Boston, Washington, New York and San Francisco by the end of the fiscal year 2010. Though Sprint has done a huge investment of $1 billion in WiMax 4G technology, Sprint is also being pressurized with significant financial and customer- related issues. The repeated losses of the company are a matter of great concern for the management and investors.
Mike Roberts, an analyst with Informa Telecoms & Media, commented that in comparison to Verizon and AT&T, Sprint is losing its customers gradually due to this loss, the company is trying to retain its customers through devices like the HTC Evo and services like 4G.
