People have started to bitterly vent their frustration and anger at NHS Wiltshire boss Jeff James mainly over the failure to go ahead with a new health center for Devizes.
On Monday, NHS Wiltshire officially announced that the proposal to install a Primary Care Center alongside a retirement village, right next to Quakers Walk, was something that would not be happening because it is not financially viable.
It had already been expected that on Monday night, many people who were against the centre being built close to the ancient tree-lined walk would swarm Wiltshire Council's Devizes Area Board at the Corn Exchange, but instead more of those people turned up who were worried about the health provision provided in the town.
As many as three Devizes GP surgeries and the NHS had shifted attention to Quakers Walk as a site for the center after saying no to the earlier preferred site which was at Green Lane and was picked last November. In addition to being a place which housed all the three surgeries, the health center would have been inclusive of many other services which are provided at Devizes Hospital and health clinic currently, including dentistry and an outpatient clinic.
"Our board position still stands. The site we prefer to develop is Green Lane. I suspect that is what we will go back to. Personally I'm determined we make progress in Devizes. Even if we get stuck at Green Lane, Southgate House (NHS Wiltshire's headquarters) is still an option, although that is the least preferred site of the GPs", said Chief Executive of NHS Wiltshire, Mr. James, while speaking at the meeting where the decision was announced.
He did not, however, provide any assurances about when and where the center would now be built.
