The FDA has warned parents to keep their kids and teens away from tanning beds, as the tanning could lead to grave hazards.
The board members have recommended that FDA must apply restrictions on tanning beds and lamps.
Many studies have found that exposure to ultraviolet light and the usage of tanning beds, at an adolescent age, is the chief reason of skin cancer.
Tanning beds and lamps are on FDA’s list of Class 1 equipments which probably causes injuries. Elastic bandages are another example of Class 1 equipments.
The FDA Board meeting comprised of 16 members who advised that tanning beds should be listed under Class 2 equipments, because it requires special declarations, such as labeling, necessary performance factors, which would ensure the safety aspect. Class 2 equipments involve X-ray machines and electronic wheelchairs.
The American Academy of Dermatology Association has given its paradigm of the usage of tanning equipment. They assume that, indoor tanning is a wrong option for non-medical purpose.
The Indoor Tanning Association is against any additional parameter, relating to the tanning beds. The ITA could not comment earlier than the board completed its discussions.
No less than 30 million populace tan indoors each year, and almost three quarters of them are females, belonging the age group of 16 and 29.
